Alcan Aluminium Ltd. has changed its legal name to Alcan Inc. to reflect the company's global reach and diversified product mix in specialty packaging. Montreal-based Alcan, the world's second-largest aluminum maker, said the name change stems from its merger in October with Swiss-based specialty packaging maker Algroup. It ends Alcan's 14-year tradition of using the British spelling of aluminum in its corporate name. "The name change will better reflect this diversity, not only of products but also of materials," said Bill Blundell, Alcan's interim president and chief executive. "Today we offer a variety of packaging solutions using paperboard, plastics, glass and other materials, as well as aluminum foil. We also provide advanced technology offerings in the engineered products, mass transportation and automotive sectors."
