Artwork that WorksCreativity is what drives the decorating industry. But for many of today’s glass and ceramic decorators, continually developing and introducing new designs can appear to be an insurmountable challenge. Few companies have the necessary time and money required to hire an artist to hand-paint their products, and companies that do hand-paint their designs often have difficulty fulfilling large orders. Custom decals are another option, but large quantities must typically be ordered, costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars. If a given product decorated with a custom decal does not sell as expected, all of those decals are wasted.
Today, an increasing number of glass and ceramic decorators are instead turning to open stock decals. Suppliers of open stock decals work with talented artists from all across the country to obtain a steady stream of the freshest, most up-to-date designs. Long-term relationships between the artists and decal suppliers enable the artists to create market-driven designs, ensuring that products decorated with those decals will appeal to consumers. With open stock decals, there are no artwork or development costs, and no excess inventory, providing the potential to save thousands of dollars. Companies simply order what they need, when they need it—and minimum orders are typically not required.
For example, if a giftware company wants to make a presentation of its ceramic products to a retail pet supply chain, it can simply purchase a few open stock decals of various animals for its presentation. If the product is accepted, orders can be filled almost immediately. If the product is rejected, the financial loss is minimized.
Decorating SuccessBeing a glass or ceramic decorator is increasingly difficult in today’s highly competitive business environment. To succeed, companies have to be creative in introducing new product designs, and they must be able to develop these new designs on increasingly smaller budgets. By using open stock decals, decorators can gain the competitive edge they need to grow their businesses.

Sidebar: Beneficial PartnershipsMost glass and ceramic decorators will be able to find the design they need in the wide selection of open stock decals available from their supplier. But in some cases, a custom design might be required. Companies can often turn to their open stock decal supplier to provide this service as well. Some suppliers maintain an experienced, dedicated design staff that is willing and able to partner with the decorator and turn their design ideas into a reality.
While minimum orders for custom decals range from 50 to 750 pieces, depending upon the decal supplier, decorators receive the benefit of their suppliers’ design experience and expertise. The copyright of the designs usually remains with the company that
creates the artwork.
