I was fortunate enough to turn on the radio yesterday during a short portion of a call-in show on arts education on my local NPR channel. I’ve been listening to it online at my desk this morning, and I must say it’s fascinating.

I was fortunate enough to turn on the radio yesterday during a short portion of a call-in show on arts education on my local NPR channel (WCPN 90.3; www.wcpn.org). I’ve been listening to it online at my desk this morning (a link to the audio is below), and I must say it’s fascinating.

The station bills the show as:

Today Dee Perry spends the show looking at the impact of arts education in Northeast Ohio, during this special call-in program, produced in partnership with Northern Ohio Live Magazine. Joining Dee are national arts education expert from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and Harvard's Project Zero, Lois Hetland co-author of Studio Thinking: The Real Benefits of Visual Arts Education. Also joining Dee as she opens the phones are Annie McNally-Dienes from Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio and award-winning Berea High School art teacher, Jim Bycznski.

The panel members and callers have covered a number of great topics, including:
  • funding woes
  • teachers’ roles in building student confidence
  • the correlation between arts education and overall student achievement
  • the role of art education in developing problem solving skills
  • integrating art education with other school subjects
The show is about 45 minutes long, and it’s worth every minute. It doesn’t focus on ceramics specifically, but anyone involved in arts education will definitely benefit from giving it a listen.
