King's Point Pottery owners Linda Yates and David Hayashida have recently been nominated for the prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award by the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador (CCNL). Since 1977, the annual award has honored excellence in fine crafts in Canada. In March 2012, the selected winner will be presented with a $25,000 prize, and that individual's work will be added to the permanent collection at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
In 1992, King's Point Pottery in King's Point, Newfoundland, opened in the garage of what was originally a gas station. The pottery is has been growing ever since and is now reportedly home to the only salt/soda oven in the province. The owners use the oven in conjunction with a variety of natural and local elements, such as rocks and beach sand, to create interesting colors and textures in their work.
