Cerdyne, Inc.: Silicon Nitride Rolling Elements

When processed using the proprietary techniques developed by Ceradyne, Inc., silicon nitride has outstanding mechanical reliability, wear resistance and contact fatigue resistance.

Silicon nitride is a strong, tough, lightweight ceramic material ideal for structural applications. When processed using the proprietary techniques developed by Ceradyne, Inc., it has outstanding mechanical reliability, wear resistance and contact fatigue resistance. Ceradyne has developed silicon nitride to a level where valve trains of heavy-duty diesel engines, high-pressure common rail fuel pumps and unit fuel injection systems can operate under conditions where conventional metal parts fail. The company's silicon nitride cam rollers operate at contact stresses of 1.0 to 2.4 GPa (150,000-350,000 psi) with no measurable wear to the silicon nitride or the companion metallic components. Ceradyne will display its rolling element product line, including rollers and balls for bearing applications and cam rollers, at the upcoming National Design Engineering Show, booth 9255, in Chicago, March 18-21. Ceradyne will also exhibit other examples of components produced from non-oxide ceramics, such as silicon nitride, silicon carbide, aluminum nitride and boron carbide, benefiting a wide range of industrial applications.
