The Corning Museum of Glass made history on May 24, 2001, as it celebrated its 50th anniversary. In honor of the milestone, the museum has introduced a historic new exhibit; a distinctive new gallery; an outdoor stage for glassblowing demonstrations; and an innovative new studio feature, where visitors will work with glass. In conjunction with the anniversary, The Corning Museum of Glass and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will jointly present "Glass of the Sultans," the first major exhibition of Islamic glass. Spanning more than 12 centuries, the exhibit will be on display at the museum until September 3, 2001. The museum will also open the new Frederick Carder Gallery, honoring Frederick Carder (1863-1963), glass design giant and co-founder of Steuben Glass. Holding more than 1,000 pieces designed by Carder, the gallery will showcase the world's most comprehensive collection of Carder glass on long-term loan from the Rockwell Museum of Western Art.

The Corning Museum of Glass is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. From July 1 through Labor Day, it is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call (607) 974-8797 or visit http://www.cmog.org.
