Corning Inc. will spend $150 million to expand a Pennsylvania manufacturing plant and add 1,500 jobs by fall 2002. With the additional workers, the company will employ a total of 2,500 at the Benton Township plant, which makes optical amplifiers used in telecommunications systems. The amplifiers enable data to pass through fiber-optic lines quickly and are important in improving the speed of information delivered on the Internet. "We really foresee a strong demand from our customers for our products during the next several years and it's very important to our business to have the capacity in place to meet those requirements,'' said Debbie Samelson, plant manager at the Pennsylvania facility. Samelson said Corning will build an addition to its 135,000-square-foot plant, which will increase its size to nearly 300,000 square feet. The company has already hired about 600 people and is continuing to add employees at a rate of about 20 per week. For additional information, visit http://www.corning.com.
