The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators (SGCD) will host its DECO 2003 show and seminar in Nashville, Tenn., March 29-April 1. The seminar program will focus on marketing with added value in the glass and ceramic decorating industry and will include sessions on marketing in the global economy, as well as the well-known SGCD technical seminars on decorating materials and processes, decal innovation, organic decorating, precious metal application and other topics. The exhibition will feature more than 40 industry suppliers of colors, decals, lehrs and kilns, precious metals, decorating equipment, blankware, refining services, frosting products and other items and services used by glass and ceramic decorators. Following is a brief overview of some of the anticipated highlights of the event.
Decorating FundamentalsDECO 2003 will open on Saturday, March 29, with a full-day presentation of SGCD’s annual First Step Decorating Fundamentals seminar. Speakers will provide an overview of the glass and ceramic decorating industry with sessions on substrates, direct decorating, transfer decorating, special effects, firing and testing. This seminar is specifically geared toward those who are new to the decorating industry or those who are familiar with only one or two particular aspects of glass and ceramic decoration and would like to broaden their expertise.
Market Trends and Business TipsThe seminar’s keynote session will be held on Monday, March 31, and will cover trends in major decorator market segments, focusing on the future prospects of these segments in the face of growing overseas competition.
Also on March 31, James Calderwood, SGCD’s general counsel, will present a summary of state and federal regulations that affect decorators, including metal leaching standards for food-contact surfaces, lip and rim surfaces, decorative ware and packaging. He will also cover current issues relating to California’s Proposition 65 and the EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory.
Monday’s seminar will also include sessions on general business topics, including the use of software to track production from the receipt of components to the shipment of finished ware. Carl Buffington, IPS Logic, and Rich Santoriello, Lenox, will discuss how software programs such as the Lenox Manufacturing Execution System can increase production efficiency. Additionally, Cynthia Nelson from JT Nelson & Assoc. will discuss recruiting issues.
Process InnovationsOn Tuesday, April 1, attendees will learn of technical innovations in decorating processes, organic decorating, decal innovation and precious metal applications. Mark Kelly, from Dubois, Pa., will moderate a session on decorating process innovations that will include presentations on practical decorating techniques.
Steve Presutto, Coates Screen, will host a session on organic decorating innovation—a topic that is increasingly important in decorating market segments such as glass containers. During the session, George Koch, RUCO Printing Inks, will examine UV printing inks for glass decoration; Jim Raymont, EIT Instrument Markets, will discuss the establishment of a UV process window; and R.W. Stowe, Fusion UV, will examine UV exposure for glass decorating.
Dean Cattieu, Waste Technology Services, will examine waste disposal methods for glass and ceramic decorators with a focus on identifying the most efficient and effective ways to dispose of production wastes in an environmentally responsible way. In addition, Ceram Research will present the results of its research into the application of the EPA TCLP leaching test to glassware decorated with metal-bearing colors.
Tuesday’s technical seminar program will also include a review of technical innovations related to flat glass coatings. The program will be directed by Prem Boaz, Glass Products Consulting Co., and Geoff Weinstock, Ferro Corp.
