Handbuilt Pottery is a wonderful DVD that includes step-by-step handbuilding instructions for building forms using three types of clay: porcelain, stoneware and raku (all of which require different temperatures when firing).

A standard procedure for joining slabs is explained, and some of the different methods to create forms are described and demonstrated: hard slabs, soft slabs, and free-forming organic forms using molds as a guide. Coils, which were used in ancient times prior to the potter’s wheel, are still used today. Coils can be part of the structure or included as a decorative element in the design of the form.

This DVD is very educational and would engage students from the elementary level and up. Included with the DVD is a ceramics reference guide for wheel-thrown pottery, handbuilt pottery, handbuilt clay sculpture, and glazing and firing.
