Flow Pressure Systems: Hot Isostatic Press

Flow Pressure Systems, Vasteras AB recently installed a Quintus® hot isostatic pressing (HIP) system (QIH 275) at Howmet's production facility in Whitehall, Mich. The unit features a large 43.75 in. diameter by 65 in. high (1.11 x 1.65 m) hot zone, which includes Flow's patented uniform rapid cooling system. Typical applications for this unit are defect healing of castings, consolidation of powders to near net shapes and diffusion bonding of dissimilar materials. The press is rated at 30,000 psi (200 Mpa), with a molybdenum furnace rated at 1260°C (2300°F). Final testing indicated that workloads up to 5000 lbs can be rapidly heated and cooled to complete floor-to-floor cycles in less than eight hours with a four-hour soak period.
