Earlier this year, CeramTec laid the cornerstone for its new wing in the Czech city of Sumperk, northeast of Prague. The company is investing approximately $2 million in the expansion of this location.

In the presence of Sumperk Mayor Peter Krill and numerous other guests, Jörg Deisel, chairman of the board of CeramTec AG, launched the erection of the building. Expansion of the production area from 14,000 to 33,000 square feet is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2001. Ceramic sealing discs for sanitary faucets will be produced at this site, and 70 new jobs will be added to the current 212.

“The finishing of our ceramic sealing and control discs—such as for use in the sanitary installations industry—can now be completely concentrated at our Sumperk site. This is the substance of our strategy of consolidating wage intensive production processes at a competitive location, in order to create cost structures which can compete globally. It is thus essential for state-of-the-art production lines and group work models to be in place from the outset.

“Profitable growth will lead to further growth at this location in the future. With this new production site, we are establishing a global benchmark for productivity and quality,” declared Deisel at the foundation ceremony.

CeramTec Czech Republic s.r.o., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CeramTec AG, Plochingen, reaped sales of $7 million in fiscal 1998/99 with products for mechanical and equipment engineering, as well as the finishing of sealing and control discs. For the current fiscal year, the company expects sales to increase by more than 50%.
