As one of the first cities to adopt LEED for public buildings and the city that is home to the most LEED-certified buildings, Chicago is a fitting location for the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) annual Greenbuild Conference & Expo. Taking place November 17-19 at McCormick Place West, the event offers several workshops, summits, forums and educational sessions, as well as an exhibition and many networking opportunities.

General Colin L. Powell to Provide Plenary Keynote

General Colin L. Powell (Ret.) became the 65th Secretary of State on January 20, 2001. As he stated at his confirmation hearing, the guiding principle of U.S. foreign policy during his tenure was that “America stands ready to help any country that wishes to join the democratic world.”

Powell brought extensive experience with him to his office. Before becoming Secretary of State, Powell served as a key aide to the Secretary of Defense and as National Security Advisor to President Reagan. He also served 35 years in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Four-Star General and serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-1993).

Since returning to private life, Powell has become a strategic limited partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm. Powell is the founder of the Colin Powell Policy Center at his alma mater, the City College of New York. In addition, a LEED Platinum affordable housing building in Powell’s childhood neighborhood bears his name. The General Colin L. Powell Apartments in the South Bronx, N.Y., is a cutting-edge 50-unit multifamily project that resulted from a partnership between Habitat for Humanity-New York City and Blue Sea Development. Powell participated in the LEED certification ceremony.

The Opening Plenary takes place November 17.
