MARKEM Corp.: Green Laser Marking System

The models 3004 and 3005 direct laser marking systems from MARKEM Corp. produce laser energy in the green (532 nm) range of the spectral field, which is suited for optimal marking on silicon, metal and a variety of other surfaces used in the electronics industry. As the industry moves toward direct chip packaging, the need for marking silicon surfaces is increasing. Most of the common laser markers used today produce light in the near infrared (NIR) range of the spectrum (1064 nm). Many chip manufacturers have found that most NIR laser energy passes through the silicon substrate and may cause damage to the underlying active components of the device. However, laser energy in the green portion of the spectrum is readily absorbed by silicon, resulting in no damage to the product and much lower energy requirements to mark its surface.
