NanoDynamics, Inc. recently announced the opening of its new fuel cell development laboratory located at its company headquarters in Buffalo, N.Y. The facility incorporates a full range of fabrication and test equipment to support the design, development and testing of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The company plans to have initial prototype microtubular fuel cell systems in operation later this year. A fuel cell is a device that combines hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity. The lack of readily available hydrogen has been one of the impediments to the commercial application of fuel cells to replace conventional batteries and internal combustion engines. NanoDynamics is developing a fuel cell that will be capable of operating on readily available fuels, such as propane, methane and butane, in addition to hydrogen.
