At Coverings 2000 in Orlando, Fla., May 2-5, 2000, the 13th annual Pavilion of Spain will far surpass all previous exhibits with a record 140 manufacturers displaying their products—an increase of almost 20% over last year.

Sponsored by ASCER, Spain’s association of ceramic tile manufacturers, and ICEX, its institute for foreign trade, this year’s pavilion will cover more than 91,000 net square feet and will showcase an impressive array of products encompassing every aspect of Spain’s ceramic tile industry.

Spain’s tile manufacturers continue to incorporate the latest product and equipment innovations into their rich history of tile making, resulting in one of the world’s most advanced tile industries. The record number of exhibitors from Spain at this year’s Coverings reflects the country’s increasing market share of total U.S. tile imports and its high ranking in the world for tile volume and value.

Overall, Spain is responsible for about 15.2% of global tile production and 25% of worldwide tile exports. Statistics further show that Spain’s 242 manufacturers produced 6.1 billion square feet of tile in 1998—16 million square feet per day—accounting for an increase of 9% over the previous year. A breakdown by product reflected a 45% production of wall tile and 55% of floor tile. Of that total production, Spain exported 51% (2.8 billion square feet).

In the past 10 years, Spain’s tile exports to the U.S. have multiplied by 450%. As a result, Spain exported 263 million square feet of tile to the U.S. in 1998, increasing its market share to 21.5% and making it America’s second largest supplier of ceramic tile, falling behind only Italy.

More recent figures show that in the first 10 months of 1999, Spain’s exports to the U.S. further increased by 12% and in the past three years, the U.S. has become Spain’s top world market for ceramic tile exports.
