Trying to find the best potter’s wheel to meet your needs and preferences might seem daunting, but Clay Planet (www.clay-planet.com) has helped us lay out some of the basic information you’ll need when conducting your quest.

According to “Potter’s Wheels: Selecting One for You” (featured in the September 2007 PPP), “Several basic types of potter’s wheels are available from many manufacturers. The more popular national brands all provide adequate performance, durability and generally trouble-free operation. Differences between brands are relatively insignificant, and the choice is often a matter of personal preference.”

The article provides an explanation of the basic types of wheels, including the kickwheel and treadle wheel manual varieties, as well as electric models. Other concepts to consider, such as speed control and drive systems, and motors and power, are also discussed.
