PPG Activates Solar Array at Glass Research Center

PPG Industries recently announced it has activated a new 4800-watt solar system at the PPG Glass Business and Discovery Center in Harmar, Pa., near the company’s Pittsburgh headquarters. The system reportedly enables PPG to demonstrate for customers the value of its prototype and existing solar glass products, such as the SOLARPHIRE(R) glass product line, and to help researchers and product developers gather real-world data on the performance of these products.

The center is currently equipped with two 10-module arrays: one using Solarphire PV photovoltaic glass, and one using Solarphire AR anti-reflective glass. Online monitoring software measures the real-time power output of each array, and solar power generated by the system is tied back into building operations.

The site also is available for use by PPG customers to test and demonstrate their products in one-month intervals. Customers with products installed on the array can access performance data via email or the Internet.
