Praxair, Inc. and Litton Life Support, a division of Northrop Grumman's Litton Industries subsidiary, have agreed to jointly develop and commercialize a revolutionary oxygen-generation system to provide a convenient, point-of-use, energy-efficient supply of small volumes of oxygen. The new supply system uses proprietary ceramic-membrane technology and electricity to separate oxygen from air, and would generate oxygen at the location where it would be used. A device would simply be plugged into an electrical outlet and produce high-purity, gaseous oxygen on demand. The target capacity of the device ranges between 3 and 50 liters per minute. The total small-volume oxygen market is estimated to be $5 billion globally. Praxair has been engaged in a number of ceramic-membrane-based technology development projects for several years, supported in part by an Advanced Technology Program grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
