Alcoa recently announced the release of its “2008 Corporate Sustainability Report,” an annual account of the company’s global environmental, social and economic performance.
“Alcoa has a long tradition of both setting meaningful corporate goals in the areas of financial success, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility and reporting on our progress against those goals to all of our stakeholders,” said William J. O’Rourke, vice president for Sustainability & Environment, Health & Safety. “We also expect these goals to be pursued based on all of our values. Our ‘2008 Sustainability Report’ highlights the significant advances that we have achieved and the goals that we will continue to pursue during these difficult economic times and beyond.”
Some noteworthy 2008 achievements include:
- 75.9% of Alcoa locations had zero lost workdays and 44.4% of them had no recordable injuries.
- The company achieved a 36% reduction in greenhouse gases from the 1990 base year-a 44% improvement over the target reduction of 25% by 2010.
- Approximately 90% of Alcoa’s worldwide operating locations have community programs, putting the company within reach of its target of 100% by 2010.

Also included in the report is an independent commentary by AccountAbility, a global not-for-profit partnership dedicated to thought leadership and advisory services focused on sustainable development. Alcoa has worked with AccountAbility over the last two years to improve the transparency and quality of its sustainability reporting. Alcoa provided space for AccountAbility to comment on the company’s sustainability reporting and to offer advice on how Alcoa can continue to improve its reporting.
