Ronald G. Brenneman, who served as manager of Engineering
Services at Allied Mineral Products Inc., Columbus,
Ohio, for 19 years, passed away
on January 23. He semi-retired in 2009 but continued to work as manager of
Special Projects.
Prior to joining Allied, Ron held positions as assistant VP,
Technical director, for Songer Corp., and executive VP of Hepworth Refractories
and Armco Steel. For over 20 years at Armco, Ron worked in the ironmaking,
engineering, refractories and graphite research groups. Ron’s more recent
professional passion was for casthouse refractory design and special projects.
He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
from West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1967 and was a registered professional
engineer. He was a member of the American Ceramic Society, AISE, ISS, Eastern
States Blast Furnace and the Cove Oven Association through the years. Ron
co-authored a casthouse refractories chapter of the AISE Steel Foundation’s
“The Making, Shaping and Treating of Steel,” held patents, wrote and gave many
presentations on optimizing refractory mechanical design, and enjoyed teaching
about engineering refractory solutions. His legacy will stem from his
enthusiasm to share and apply refractory knowledge, a torch he passed on to
many in the refractory industry he loved for over 40 years.
