In the environmental category, Acme Brick, Fort Worth, Texas, received an award for its "Comprehensive Environmental Management System"-a company-wide program credited with instilling consistent environmental practices for all Acme plants across the country. Acme's program also resulted in the active involvement of virtually every level of management down to the shop floor.
The "York Plant Baghouse Removal Project," submitted by Glen-Gery Corp., Wyomissing, Pa., was also honored because it resulted in the plant reducing its electricity demand, while enabling Glen-Gery to continue to operate within all applicable air quality requirements.
Judging criteria included the degree to which the entrant provided both quantitative and qualitative information on ways in which the entry contributed to improvements in the environment, and demonstrations of the company's overall commitment to expanding employee knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the importance of environmental stewardship.
In the health and safety category, Acme Brick, Fort Worth, Texas, won the award for "Innovative Safety & Health Compliance and Training Manual." The company's manual provides employees with a comprehensive understanding of safety issues they may face and features a format that is easy to read and use. The manual is written in both Spanish and English, with site-specific guidance on key safety issues throughout the plant, and was recognized as a key factor in contributing to a precipitous reduction in injuries.
Boral Brick, Atlanta, Ga., was honored in the "Behavior-Based Safety Process" category, which recognizes companies that develop programs enabling employees to provide safety education input based on their work experience in the plant. Boral's program resulted in a striking reduction in injury rates due to input received from employees working on the plant floor.
Additionally, Hanson Brick, Charlotte, N.C., was presented with the "Safety & Health Compliance Program" award for a comprehensive safety education program based on an 800-page manual developed by the company. The program was credited with having led to dramatic reductions in both lost-time cases and lost days.
Judging criteria included the degree to which the entrant provided both quantitative and qualitative information on ways in which the entry contributed to effective management of employee health and safety; and demonstration of the company's overall commitment to expanding employee knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the importance of employee health and safety.
