The Ultrasonic 20 linear from DMG is capable of machining conventional metals, such as steel, aluminum, carbide and hardened steel, and advanced materials like glass and ceramics through an ultrasonic tool. Ultrasonic machining spindles create an oscillation that makes the diamond tool pulse with a frequency between 17,500 and 48,000 times per second, depending on the spindle type. This removes micro-particles from the work piece surface, which provides a 5x increase in the removal rate compared to conventional machining methods for advanced materials. The permanent gap between the tool and the work piece leads to a significant reduction of process forces and thermal stress, conserving the tool and the work piece.
