NSL Analytical Services has expanded its testing capacity with the installation of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometer (ICP/MS) instruments. The Perkin Elmer Optima™ 5300DV ICP optical emission spectrometer (OES) is NSL’s third ICP/OES instrument, while the Perkin Elmer Elan® DRC II ICP mass spectrometer is NSL’s fifth ICP/MS instrument and the second with dynamic reaction cell (DRC) technology.
The Optima 5300DV ICP/OES will be used for bulk material analysis to detect the presence of elements at 0.1% to over 50% levels. ICP/OES is an accurate, all-purpose method that can be used for most materials. It can detect more than 73 elements and provides fast sample throughput. One reason NSL chose the Optima 5300DV is the instrument’s easy-change bayonet torch assembly. This quick-change feature, combined with easy cleaning, reduces downtime and enables NSL to maintain fast sample turnaround time.
The Elan DRC II ICP mass spectrometer will be used for trace analysis and can verify material purity at the 99.99% level. The use of DRC technology improves sensitivity and reduces interference, resulting in improved detection limits for difficult elements. The instrument also improves productivity by reducing the number of runs required.
