New Planetary Ball Mills from Retsch Grind Samples to Sub-Micron Size

Planetary ball mills provide the necessary high grinding energies required for the reduction of particles to low micron and sub-micron sizes. The Retsch planetary ball mill PM 400 features electronic control of both time and speed, as well as rotation reversal and a parameter-lock. Its sturdy design and powerful 1.5 kW drive, in combination with the tight, easy-to-handle grinding jars, make it ideally suited for long-term colloidal grinding processes and mechanical alloying. Due to its large diameter of the central wheel, the PM 400 provides about 20% more grinding energy than conventional planetary mills.

Up to eight jars of 50 ml, or four jars of 125 ml, 250 ml or 500 ml, may be placed into the four grinding stations. The unique Retsch jars are distinguished by 0-rings that ensure a no-loss processing of dry samples or slurries, even during long-term grinding involving significant volume expansion or temperature rise. Flanges on the jar facilitate handling, and the gap between upper and lower flange provides for easy opening of the jar even when under pressure. The unique C-type grinding jars are available in a choice of steels, tungsten carbide and ceramics, such as sintered aluminum and zirconium oxide as well as agate.

Typical samples in the ceramic industry include oxides and rare earths for R&D purposes, particularly in the field of high-performance ceramics. The planetary ball mill is mostly used to simulate production mills or to produce specimens of expensive high-tech ceramics in an experimental stage.
