The SGCD's 2002 Discovery Awards recognized outstanding decorated ceramic and glassware design and technical achievements.
The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators (SGCD) sponsors the annual Discovery Awards competition to recognize outstanding decorated ceramic and glassware design and technical achievements. Winners are honored during the awards banquet at the annual DECO trade show and seminar. The 2002 awards featured 320 entries in 15 design and 7 technical categories. Two awards were presented in each design category, with glass and ceramic entries judged separately.

Winners are honored during the awards banquet at the annual DECO trade show and seminar. The 2002 awards featured 320 entries in 15 design and 7 technical categories. Two awards were presented in each design category, with glass and ceramic entries judged separately.
In addition to the design and technical awards, SGCD also honored two Discovery entries for overall merit. All entries were displayed in SGCD’s Discovery Room during DECO 2002 in Arlington, Va., February 23-26, and winners were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed each category and selected winners by consensus. This year’s judging panel included Holly Carter, U.S. Glass/Glass.com; Arn Bernstein, ASI; and Norb Buddenbohn, Baltimore Glassware Decorators and past SGCD president (1971-72).

Vandenoever Award: Lenox China
Every year, SGCD members who visit the Discovery Room vote to select a “Best of Show” entry to receive the annual Vandenoever Award. The 2002 recipient is Lenox China for its White House-commissioned “Clinton Service” tableware commemorating the White House’s 100th anniversary. The ware is decorated with raised paste and hand-applied precious metal.Judges’ Award: Design Point Decal

About SGCD
SGCD was founded in 1963 and now serves a record number of decorators and vendors to the decorating industry. A total of 433 members and their associates attended the annual show and technical seminar in Arlington, Va., which included the Discovery Award program.
