Porous Materials, Inc. (PMI) has produced a chart that matches
appropriate porosity characterization instruments and techniques to
applications. Measurement and control of porosity in ceramics is
critical in many diverse applications ranging from refractories to
advanced fuel combustion systems. Important properties include
largest pore size, mean pore size, pore distribution, gas and liquid
permeability and system integrity. Testing techniques and instruments
for characterizing porosity are based on different principles and,
therefore, don't provide the same information. The proper selection
of one or more techniques requires matching of the characteristics of
the test and the requirements of the specific application.
