Refractron Technologies Corp. is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009. Headquartered in Newark, N.Y., the company designs and manufactures advanced, controlled-porosity, dense, high-purity, high-precision structural ceramic components.
Refractron was established in 1984 with the acquisition from Remet Ceramics of the plant, equipment and technology at its present location. The business was originally based on porous ceramic technology purchased from The Carborundum Co. in 1981, along with the active filter driver technology of Tetron, Inc. Today, the Refractron facility has grown to more than 90,000 square feet, and 75 employees work three production shifts.
Over the past quarter-century, Refractron, which is ISO 9001:2000 certified, has grown by solving engineering problems using ceramic material, and through the acquisition of new technologies. In the 1990s, the company began producing membrane filters for chemical and mineral applications. Filter drier core production was increased significantly in 2000, and, in 2003, the company acquired structural ceramic manufacturers Xylon Ceramic Materials, Inc. of Alfred, N.Y., and Advanced Ceramics, Inc. of Painted Post, N.Y.
Refractron's advanced porous ceramics are used in filters, diffusers and other applications requiring controlled porosity. Products include membrane and monolithic filter tubes and plates; diffuser discs, domes and tubes; and absorbent filter/drier cores for refrigerant fluids. The company's dense, structural zirconia and alumina ceramics are used in the chemical, electronics, petrochemical and biomedical industries for severe wear and corrosion applications. The materials’ high precision machining characteristics make it ideal for products like valve seats, pump liners and sleeves.
