Due to greatly increased fuel costs, The Haeger Potteries recently engaged Ruark Engineering to study and improve fuel consumption of a large, high-speed tunnel kiln. Simple operating changes provided large savings -- approaching $100,000 per year -- with the promise of 10% additional savings. "Many tunnel kilns fire with excess air control, and many others have too much excess air from the cooling zone," said Ralph Ruark, president of Ruark Engineering. "Reduction of excess air, or utilization of a portion of it as combustion air, can provide significant savings."
