Solvay Chemicals, Inc.: Air Pollution Control (posted 5/19/08)

May 19, 2008

Solvay Chemicals, Inc. recently announced the expansion of its SOLVAir® Products portfolio with a new product named SOLVAir Select 300. Based on sodium bicarbonate, this new product is specifically designed for use in air pollution control applications, especially for the treatment of sulfur dioxide (SO2).

Select 300 will be produced at Solvay Chemicals’ soda ash plant at Green River, Wyo., through an innovative process for which a patent has been filed. Production of Select 300 will have no impact on the plant’s soda ash production capacity, but will substantially improve the overall environmental performance of the Green River plant.

“This development is in line with the Solvay Group’s commitment toward Sustainable Development, as it supports applications aimed at mitigating the environmental impact of air emissions and improves the efficiency of our Green River plant,” said Christine Tahon, managing director of the Solvay Group’s Soda Ash SBU.

Initial production capacity for Select 300 will be 125,000 tons per year; however, the plant is designed to be easily expanded to accommodate the anticipated growth of market demand that will result from tightening air pollution regulations. The project will involve a capital expenditure of slightly more than $40 million. Startup is expected in early 2010, at which point SOLVAir Products production capacity at Green River will exceed 500,000 tons per year.

“This is further proof of our commitment to the dry sorbent injection technology supported by our SOLVAir Products marketing efforts in the USA and our NEUTREC® approach in Europe, which have both been showing strong performance since the mid-nineties,” said Mike Wood, SOLVAir Products business manager. “Select 300 will be an ideal solution to meet the regulations for SO2 control.”
