Survey Says!

April 15, 2011
Many of our readers have shared their thoughts regarding the proposed high-speed rail network that has been under consideration by President Obama and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Where do you stand on the issue?

In last week’s CI CyberNews CyberPoll, we asked readers if they are in favor of the proposed high-speed rail network that has been under consideration by President Obama and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Readers are split evenly on the issue, with 47.1% for and 47.1% against the high-speed rail network (5.8% are unsure).

This survey generated a large number of reader comments, including:

“This high speed rail is a joke. At least in Ohio we had enough sense to kill it.”

“This type of infrastructure needs to be self-sustaining in every sense. We don't need another Amtrak.”

“High speed rail has been a money pit that does not support the American style of living. Too expensive and never self supporting.”

“I’m not that familiar-is it for commuters or commercial use? If commuters, then definitely yes; it would greatly decrease dependence on oil.”

“This would be a great help to reduce our consumption of foreign oil. Less cars and less airplanes = less liquid fuel consumption. Passenger (with light freight) trains run on electricity. Heavy freight can run on diesel or natural gas. Let’s cut the spigot.”

“Huge waste of money that will only benefit the rich.”

“I would be more in favor of real broadband options in this country. America is something like 25th in the world for access to broadband. There is no real competition and the information superhighway comprises a network that operates at a tenth the speed of other countries with significantly more expensive pricing. Access to broadband and net-neutrality are significant issues that have far reaching effects on freedom of speech and our democracy. Policy makers in the FCC and this administration need to wake up.”

“No one rides trains in this country. They need cars in the end.”
