Titanium dioxide capacities totaled 5.6 million tons in 2008, and world capacity is expected to grow 30% by 2015.
According to “Titanium Dioxide: 2009 World Market Outlook and Forecast,” a new report from Merchant Research & Consulting, titanium dioxide capacities totaled 5.6 million tons in 2008 with average operating rates of 95%. With a considerable number of projects planned to be implemented, world capacity will grow 30% by 2015, and two-thirds of titanium dioxide will be produced via the chloride route.
Major construction will be in Asia and in China, in particular, and it is anticipated that China will become a world-leading producer in 2015. Capacity enlargement is also expected in North America, Central and East Europe, and South America.
Titanium dioxide demand will go up 2-3% annually, driven by growth in its main application areas. The paints and coatings sector, one of areas where titanium dioxide is widely used as a white powder pigment, has been growing consistently.
