Union Process, Inc.: Mini Lab Circulation Attritor (posted 2/13/09)

February 13, 2009

Union Process, Inc. has produced a special version of its Q-03 laboratory-sized circulation grinding mill for a customer in the ink market. To meet the customer's unique requirements, Union Process designed and built a special sized processing tank, a mechanical shaft seal, and a completely explosion-proof system with no air motors.

The design of the Q-03 allows for a high-circulation pumping rate, which results in narrow particle size distribution and good temperature control. Like all circulation attritors, the Q-03 utilizes a separate holding tank that is typically 10 times the size of the attritor grinding tank. During the circulation process, the material makes multiple passes through the grinding chamber until the desired particle size is achieved. Each pass takes about 20 seconds. The high circulation rate, combined with the multiple passes, results in faster grind times and a narrower particle size distribution.

The small Q-03 attritor is ideal for research studies or quality control studies. It is possible to process as little as 2.5 liters of material and still get the advantages of circulation processing.
