Weir will be responsible for the SpecTruLite® line of heavy-metal-free organic inks and coatings used to decorate a variety of glass containers.
Ferro Glass Systems has named Senior Scientist Sean Weir product manager of the SpecTruLite® line of heavy-metal-free organic inks and coatings used to decorate a variety of glass containers. He will be responsible for sales and marketing, managing technical service for prospective sales, and supporting Ferro’s global organic glass products business. Weir reports to Michael Morrissey, Glass Systems sales and marketing manager for North America, and will work closely with R&D, production and technical service to support production planning and to develop new business opportunities.
“This is a critical new position because 95% of all glass containers manufactured in the U.S. (36 billion bottles per year) and 75% worldwide (180 billion bottles a year) are produced with one or more coatings,” said Morrissey. “SpecTruLite and our global organic products are becoming increasingly important to our customers who are switching to more environmentally preferred heavy-metal-free products to decorate their beverage, cosmetic and other glass containers. Sean will spearhead Ferro’s initiative to significantly increase our support to help customers and prospects make the transition to organics, which is happening at an accelerating rate to comply with heavy metals regulations.”
Weir joined Ferro in 1997 and served as an associate chemist in Mediums Organics & Laser Development. For the past seven years, he worked exclusively for Glass Systems Laser Marking R&D and Technical Service as senior scientist. Prior to joining Ferro, Weir served in scientific and technical positions with PPG Industries and Waston Standard Co. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s of science degree in chemistry.
