Quest Technologies: Heat Stress Instrumentation (posted 11/26/08)

Quest Technologies recently announced the addition of the QUESTemp° 44 and 46 to its portable heat stress instrumentation series. These instruments are used to evaluate indoor and outdoor environmental conditions for the potential to cause heat stress or heat-related injuries. The QUESTemp° 44 and 46 incorporate a waterless wet bulb sensor, which offers traditional heat stress monitoring without the aggravation of wet bulb maintenance.

Using the waterless wet bulb calculation method, an algorithm uses temperature and humidity readings to calculate the wet bulb equivalent temperature and to compute the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT). WBGT is a recognized method to monitor environmental conditions related to heat stress. The waterless web bulb calculation ensures accurate WBGT readings without the maintenance of adding water to the wet bulb sensor.

These heat stress monitors provide simplified heat stress management with high-quality product features. Both models measure/calculate the dry bulb, wet bulb and globe temperatures, along with indoor and outdoor WBGT, relative humidity, and heat index/Humidex. A real-time clock provides accurate reporting with time stamping. On-board data logging, along with QuestSuite Professional II software, allows for advanced analysis of data with charting, graphing and reporting options.

In addition, the QUESTemp° 46 includes the ability to measure stay times in order to manage work/rest regimens. Guidance is based on the screening criteria for heat stress as defined in the ACHIH TLV Handbook, U.S. Navy PHEL charts, U.S. Marine Flag system and EPRI Action Limits. The QUESTemp° 46 also features an optional detachable air probe.
