Reuse, Recycle, Recreate

Artisans at Kenya's Kitengela Glass fashion imaginative new products from recycled waste materials.

Located just outside Nairobi National Park, the Kitengela Glass compound is a perfect model of a creative organization that brings together art and environmental awareness. Artisans primarily use recycled materials to create vases, mosaics, stained glass windows, and anything else they can imagine. Many reuse salvaged glass from windows or bottles in traditional glass blowing methods. Artisans have also found alternative sources of energy to run the soldering irons and cook food.

Nani Croze, who came to Kenya from Germany 30 years ago, founded Kitengela Glass to encourage others to find the unconventional beauty in their environment. The unique products created at the compound are sold elsewhere in Africa, but some are also shipped to Europe and North America because of their international popularity.
