REVIEW: Studio Protector: The Artist's Guide to Emergencies

Fortunately, Jamestown, Colo.-based furnituremaker Glen Kalen was adequately insured for business losses before a lightning-induced wildfire consumed his home and studio.

The Studio Protector is a vital resource for artists regardless of their choice of media. Even though we don’t like to think about it, disaster could strike at any time and artists have special considerations in times of crisis.

The Studio Protector is not just any pamphlet; it is an interactive guide made to hang on the wall. Designed by artists for artists, this guide addresses how to reduce the impact of disasters, protect your career by planning for disasters, and respond to a disaster.

This emergency guide contains information to “reduce the impact of disaster” before it happens by making recommendations concerning the artwork, digital files, documents, portfolio, workspace and insurance. It includes guidelines concerning preparation for fire and flood, wind and earthquake, communication, evacuation, knowing the risks, and returning to work.

More than just a series of checklists, the Studio Protector is visually appealing and interactive. From the “Protect-o-Wheel” to the pull-out booklets concerning disaster response, this guide is a likely-to-be-used vital resource.

The Studio Protector is produced by the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF). For additional information, visit http://craftemergency.org.
