MoreRHI recently announced it has signed a contract to acquire SMA Mineral Magnesia AS (SMA), Norway, for approximately NOK 100 million (~ $17.9 million). SMA produces seawater-based magnesium hydroxide, which can be processed to fused magnesia. RHI will subsequently invest up to €70 million (~ $98 million) in a fusing plant at the SMA site.
Starting in the summer of 2012, RHI will produce up to 80,000 tons of high-grade fused magnesia annually in Norway. With this project, RHI says it is making an important step toward the execution of its raw material strategy and thereby increasing its level of self sufficiency with regard to magnesia-based raw materials.
