Southeastern Section Fall Meeting to Focus on Sustainability (posted 8/26/08)

The Southeastern Section and the Whitewares and Materials Division of the American Ceramic Society will hold “Sustainable Materials, Sustainable Manufacturing” October 27-29, 2008, at the Downtown Doubletree Hotel in Nashville, Tenn. The Technical Program on Tuesday will include presentations by W. Mark McGinley, Ph.D., of the University of Louisville; Hemant W. Dandekar, Ph.D., of Porcelain Industries, Inc.; Gregg Borchelt of the Brick Industry Association; and more. The full schedule is included below:

Monday, October 27: Golf, Registration and Reception
  • 12:00 - 5:00 p.m.: Golf Outing, Hermitage President’s Reserve (box lunch included)
  • 6:00 - 7:00 pm.: Registration and Opening Reception, Doubletree Hotel
  • 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.: Dinner on your own with friends
Tuesday, October 28: Technical Program
  • 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.: Continental breakfast (included)
  • 8:30 - 8:40 a.m.: Welcome and Introductions
  • 8:45 - 9:45 a.m.: Keynote Address -- “Sustainable Building Products – A Designer/Researcher’s Approach,” W. Mark McGinley, Ph.D., University of Louisville
  • 9:50 - 10:20 a.m.: “Challenges and Opportunities for Next Generation Coatings for Heat Exchanger Applications,” Hemant W. Dandekar, Ph.D., Porcelain Industries, Inc.
  • 10:20 - 10:45 a.m.: Break
  • 10:45 - 11:15 a.m.: “Sustainability and Greening of the Brick Industry,” Gregg Borchelt, Brick Industry Association
  • 11:15 - 11:45 a.m.: “Manufacturing Changes to Make the Brick Industry More Environmentally Friendly,” Jim Frederic, The National Brick Research Center
  • 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.: Lunch
  • 1:00 - 1:30 p.m.: “Performance Coatings for Energy Efficiency,” Holger Evele, Charles Baldwin and Ken Loye, Ferro Corporation
  • 1:30 - 2:00 p.m.: “Current Research Initiatives for Ceramic Materials and Products,” William Carty, Ph.D., Alfred University

  • 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.: Reception
  • 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.: Hewitt Wilson Award Dinner, S/E Section, all invited
Wednesday, October 29: Plant Tours
  • 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.: Continental breakfast
  • 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.: Departure for Plant Tours (no direct competitors): Crossville Ceramics, Dickson, Tenn.; Porcelain Industries, Inc., Dickson, Tenn.
  • 9:00 - 10:30 a.m.: First plant tour, group 1 at Crossville and group 2 at PI
  • 11:00 - 12:30 p.m.: Second plant tour, group 2 at Crossville and group 1 at PI
  • 12:30 p.m.: Departure, end of meeting (lunch on your own)
