Winners were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed each category and chose winners by consensus. This year's judging panel included Todd Barson, chair of the Ceramic Manufacturers Association (CerMA) and technical sales manager, Performance Pigments and Colors, for Ferro Corp.; Kenneth vonRoenn, president of Architectural Glass Art; and Steve Agler, former SGCD president.
In addition to the design and technical awards, SGCD also honored two Discovery entries with the Vandenoever Award and Judges' Award for overall merit. The Vandenoever Award is presented annually to the company with the "best of show" piece in the Discovery Room as voted by show attendees.
This year's Vandenoever winner was Reusche & Co. for "Crane." This handcrafted original art by Hal Connelly was created by direct screen printing using 23 Reusche enamels. The reverse side was sand blasted, leaving a clear circle for light transmission, and slumped to form. The slumped panel was mounted in a patina-coated, bronze-cast base that appears to be made of stone. The entire piece was then mounted on a mahogany base. This piece also won in the Specialty Collectible, Glass category.
The 2007 Judges' Award for overall merit was presented to Reusche & Co. for "The Running Horse," a patented art form conceived by Rufus Butler Seder, president of Eye Think Inc. The piece is handcrafted from start to finish, and each animated mural is produced on lens-ribbed glass tile that appears to "come to life" as the casual observer strolls by. This entry also won in the Specialty Innovation, Glass category.
