Starfire Systems Receives SBIR Award from NASA

Starfire Systems recently announced that it has received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from NASA to support continued research and development for low-cost polymer interface coatings for ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials. CMC materials are 60% lighter than steel and can withstand ultra-high temperatures that would melt metallic superalloys, making them ideal for use in rocket nozzles and aircraft brakes and exhaust systems. The Phase I award is for $69,600 with a potential follow-on contract for $650,000. "This award from NASA recognizes the potential we offer to break down the cost barriers that have prevented wider use of advanced ceramic materials," said Richard Saburro, president and CEO. "Our patented polymer technology can reduce the cost of CMC materials by close to 70%, and this will not only expand their use in aerospace applications, but also open new markets in other areas, such as commercial automotive exhaust systems and home heating systems."
