Tosoh Corp. has completed a production capacity expansion for zirconia powders at its Nanyo Complex. The expansion project boosts Tosoh’s production capacity from 370 to 620 tons per year. Global Internet expansion has given rise to increased use of fiber optic cables, which can transfer large volumes of information. This has led to a rapid growth in the demand for zirconia to be used in optical connector parts, which are mounted to the optic cable.

Tosoh is reportedly the world’s largest producer of high quality zirconia powder, with around a 60% share of the global market. Approximately a 90% share is held in the market for ferrules used in fiber optics. Demand for high quality zirconia powder is expected to rise further in the fields of electronics and information technology. Tosoh is considering further capacity expansions in response to growing market demand.
