Universal Flow Monitors, Inc.: Vortex Shedding Flowmeters

Universal Flow Monitors, Inc. recently introduced upgrades in its CoolPoint™ vortex shedding flowmeters for totalization and greater consistency of process and cleaning waters in ceramic manufacturing. CoolPoint flowmeters are designed to measure and monitor water flows for slip and glaze preparation, glaze application, casting, pressing, and other operations. The flowmeters are offered in pipe sizes ranging from 1/4 to 4 in., providing 4-20 mA transmitter flow rates ranging from 0.4 to 600 gal per minute gpm (1.5 to 2271 liters per minute).

Totalizing capability is now available to increase the CoolPoint flowmeters’ ability to measure, monitor and control the total amount of cooling water used in a process. A flow totalizer with reset button and six-digit LED is offered as a special option on all CoolPoint pipe sizes. The flow totalizer features a pulse output and a display in either liters or gallons.

The CoolPoint meters’ high accuracy and repeatability provide flow consistency of process waters as well as slip filter press waters and cleaning waters used to wash glaze from stands, booths and baths. CoolPoint models in 1/2 through 2 in. pipe sizes are available with ± 1% full-scale accuracy; ± 2% FS accuracy is standard on all models. Flow repeatability of ± .25% of actual flow is standard on all models.

CoolPoint flowmeters are non-mechanical meters that can measure and monitor recycled water-containing particles. Unlike mechanical switches, the meters have no moving parts to stick or coat, eliminating potential for clogging by these particles.

Flow turndown of 20:1 is a new option on 1/2 through 2 in. pipe sizes, an increase from the 10:1 turndown. Turndown is the ratio of the maximum to the minimum flow rate that a flowmeter can measure. The increased turndown ratio improves the users’ capability to detect, read and record low flows, which provides an advantage in batching and standardizing on a single flowmeter model for multiple applications.

Field adjustability of flowmeter response time to 4-20 mA transmitter flow rates is now offered on the 1/2 through 2 in. models. The user can adjust the meter’s response time from 0.9 up to 7.5 seconds. This adjustability enables the user to set the meter for a very fast response time, a necessity for signaling a robotic controller immediately in event of trouble, or for a slower time that minimizes the effect of flow fluctuation and enables a control system to respond to data based on flow averages.
