For the second consecutive year, scientists and engineers working at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) have won the prestigious R&D 100 Award from "R&D Magazine." UTRC is the innovation center for United Technologies Corp. The R&D 100 Award has honored inventors since 1963 by identifying the 100 most technologically significant products and advancements each year. The team at UTRC won the 2002 award for its efforts in proving the viability of making cooled high-pressure turbine vanes out of ceramics rather than metal, potentially reducing natural gas usage in generators by up to 4% while decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.
