Vacuum Furnace Systems Corp. (VFS) recently shipped two advanced 10 bar horizontal internal quench (HIQ) vacuum heat treating furnaces to Solar Atmospheres' new 23,000-square-foot plant in Hermitage, Pa. The VFS systems feature leading-edge technology that improves quenching beyond standard 10 bar quenching capabilities. The technological improvements include the use of helium quenching coupled with variable speed quench motor drives. This gives Solar the ability to successfully harden tool steels and other challenging materials, as well as larger cross section parts, with minimal distortion. Solar will also be able to use nitrogen or argon as the quench gas when required by a process cycle.
