Vitta Corp. recently introduced its improved G-1015 glass transfer tape, expressly made for sealing quartz (fused silica) parts. The new version of G-1015 tape yields improved uniformity in thickness in the recommended 0.001- and 0.002-in.-thick unfired frit layer. Upon firing, the final seals are 0.0005 and 0.0001 in. thick, respectively. The frit material is a pure borosilicate glass type with a low expansion value. When applied in a thin and uniform layer, the quartz parts can be joined without stress, due to thermal expansion mismatch. The working temperature of 900C is half the required temperature for direct fusing of quartz, making assembly easier.
