ZIRCAR Ceramics, Inc.: Insulation for Molten Aluminum Contact

ZIRCAR Ceramics, Inc. recently announced the introduction of its new type Z-500 alumina silica insulation. Designed specifically for use in the transport and continuous casting of molten aluminum, Z-500 features characteristics and properties beneficial to casthouse operators, including a nominal bulk density of 50 pcf (800 kg/m3), a composition of approximately 60% SiO2 and 40% Al2O3, and an average surface hardness of 93 on the A scale. The new material exhibits 0.65% shrinkage after 24 hours at 800C and is completely free of organics. Z-500 is prefired and does not outgas upon heating. It exhibits excellent non-wetting properties and is fully compatible with silica, alumina and boron nitride coatings.
