Friday Fun: Poor Thanksgiving

November 21, 2008
I noticed early this week that our little town already has all of its Christmas decorations up. I love these decorations, don’t get me wrong, but it’s only the middle of November!

It seems like the holiday that simply asks us to celebrate how thankful we are (or should be) for everything we have gets more marginalized every year. I noticed early this week that our little town already has all of its Christmas decorations up. The big tree is decorated in the square, the enormous red bow adorns the top of the library. I love these decorations, don’t get me wrong, but it’s only the middle of November!

Thanksgiving is way underrated. We’re supposed to take time together with our families and friends to celebrate everything we’re grateful for. Instead, we rush past to the more lucrative Christmas shopping-er, I mean, holiday-season.

I suppose if Thanksgiving had millions of dollars in potential gift purchases associated with it, it might garner more attention. Unfortunately, a la Rodney Dangerfield, this poor holiday seems to get no respect.
