Over 71,000 people lost their jobs yesterday. I can’t quite wrap my mind around that fact. So many jobs lost in different industries, all in just one day. I have the same feeling now that I get when I hear about a horrible natural disaster: I can’t stop wondering what all of those poor people are going to do.

On the flip side, those of us who still have our jobs (while certainly thankful for them) often have to slog through our days dealing with huge morale problems. It’s hard to remain focused on the task at hand-let alone try to develop plans for the future-while those who have been less fortunate are always in the back of our minds. And then there’s always the possibility that we might be next. I find myself sometimes tallying my household budget in my head while answering e-mail, looking for ways to cut expenses in the event that my job is the next to go.

I’m lucky that I work from an office in my home because my dogs are always willing to provide a pick-me-up moment any time I need one. I take them outside at lunchtime, and the sight of my one-year-old coonhound bolting after a tennis ball like an insane jackrabbit never fails to bring a smile to my face.

What do you do to try to keep your (or your employees’) morale high? Please share your tips by entering a comment below.
