Friday Fun: Why Fear Friday the 13th?

Friday is generally a herald of joy-the end of the work week, the beginning of a hopefully relaxing and fun weekend. But when Friday falls on the 13th of the month, things can get a little nerve-wracking.

But why? The number 13 is just one digit removed from 12 or 14, or 23, for that matter. What is it about the number 13 to sets everyone on edge?
