Alcoa World Alumina recently announced that it would adjust the alumina refining production rate at its Point Comfort, Texas, refinery from 1.8 million metric tons per year (mtpy) to 2.3 million mtpy by the end of the second quarter. For the calendar year 2003, the plant is scheduled to produce an additional 300,000 mt above the 1.8 million mtpy rate, for a total of 2.1 million mt. The move is in response to increased demand for alumina. Production levels at Point Comfort will continue to be evaluated in light of future marketplace conditions.
